WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of New Haven baseball team defeated Assumption College 6-1 Sunday afternoon to complete a
three-game sweep of the Greyhounds this weekend. The Chargers improved to 22-15-1 overall and 9-7-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division with the win, while the Greyhounds slipped to 12-27-1 overall and 4-13 in divisional play.
The Greyhounds scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning off two hits, but the Chargers shutout Assumption the rest of the game. New Haven evened the score in the top of the fourth inning when Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford) grounded out to the pitch with runners on first and third bases. Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) scored on the play and tied the game at 1-1.
Sunday’s game then went scoreless through the bottom of the fourth, the entire fifth and the sixth innings. Brendan O’Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) broke the tie in the top of the seventh inning with a single to left field to drvie in Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk).
In the top of the eighth inning, Brockett hit a sacrifice fly to right field and drove in Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) to put the Chargers ahead by two, 3-1. New Haven sealed the victory in the top of the ninth inning with five hits and three more runs. O’Reilly, Clout and Brockett each drove in runs in the inning.
John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) earned the win with eight-complete innings. He threw two strikeouts and allowed six hits. Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) closed out the game and struck out three to seal the with.
At the plate, Brendan O’Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and one run. Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) also drove in a pair of runs in the win for UNH.
