WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Despite an 81st-minute goal by Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) and a flurry of late chances, the University of New Haven men’s soccer team was unable to complete a comeback against visiting Assumption, falling 2-1 to the Greyhounds on Wednesday afternoon on Kayo Field.
With the loss, the Chargers drop to 5-8-1 on the season with a 2-7-1 Northeast-10 record. Assumption improves to 4-7-1 overall and 3-6-1 in conference action.
Purcell’s goal came off a direct kick with 80:25 on the clock and the Chargers trailing, 2-0. The graduate student blasted the ball at 23 yards out from the right side into the top left corner of the net. The goal was the fourth of Purcell’s season and career.
Purcell would put another strike on goal and have a direct kick blocked, and a header from Edwin Carvajal (Norwalk, Conn./Wilton) was turned away in the closing minutes as Assumption clung to the 2-1 lead as the final horn sounded.
The first Assumption goal came in the 16th minute. Troy Lamagna worked his way through the Charger defense and fired from point-blank range to put the Greyhounds on top, 1-0, with his second goal of the season. The visitors added to their lead after the intermission when a scrum off of a deep throw-in saw a loose ball bounce to the foot of Michael Agbortoko, who converted his fourth marker of the fall.
Anastasios Petridis (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon ) and James Pyatsky (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Garden City) each played one half in net for the Chargers, and both ceded one goal while making two saves. Dana King made four stops for the Greyhounds.
In total, New Haven was outshot, 9-7, and attempted four corner kicks to Assumption’s two.
The Chargers close out their road schedule on Saturday with a trip to No. 15 Southern New Hampshire before capping the regular season on Kayo Field with matches against Le Moyne (Oct. 23, 4 p.m.) and Saint Anselm (Oct. 26, 4 p.m.).
