The Royalty is a band that will never have to worry about being pigeonholed. They have a sound that incorporates the doo-wop vocal style of the 60s and spontaneity of punk rock. Drawing inspiration from artists like Phil Spector to Elvis Presley, each member’s individual and eclectic music taste has shaped their sound into what it is today.
When chanteuse Nicole Boudreau came to them, it was a match made in indie heaven. After hearing her soulful and enchanting vocals, there was no question that she was the perfect choice to lead the band forward.
Their conviction of individuality comes across clearly when watching their set. You can feel their energy and passion radiating from the stage. Attending a performance so captivating, there is no doubt that they would be able to keep this hold on even the largest of crowds. This has always been their biggest strength; so much so, that Victory Records decided to sign them after seeing them at a showcase in 2011.
After seeing them in their element, it is easy to see that the label made the right choice. There is no shortage of chemistry during the show as they embody their signature quirky rock ‘n’ roll feel. Their ability to connect with the audience and each other is a testament to their talent as entertainers.
Before their set, I had a chance to talk with the band. The vibe is cool and composed. Each member is refined and soft-spoken, a complete 180 from their vivacious stage personas. It’s safe to say that they truly come alive through their music. The five-piece from Texas is still in awe of their mainstream success.
Hearing their song and newest single “I Want You” on MTV’s hit show Awkward was one of the peak moments of their career so far. Talking about the exposure they received from the show, they are still visibly excited and grateful.
Being a band in today’s music industry is tougher than ever, but The Royalty proves that musicians with true talent and an inimitable spark will find success. According to them, the key to their originality is not getting caught up in the gimmicks or hooks that other bands use. Using the past as their muse allows them to maintain a distinct sound, a plan that has served them well thus far. With their first full length album “Lovers” out now and gaining recognition, this is certainly a band to keep an eye out for in the future.
