Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams opened their indoor season Friday, Dec. 7, at the Elm City Challenge hosted by Southern Connecticut State University.
The men and women competed against University of Hartford and SCSU, and the top four scorers earned points for their team. For New Haven, the men came in third, and the women came in second.
On the men’s side, senior David Thomas won the long jump with an NCAA provisional mark of 7.28 meters, and won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.44 seconds.
Freshman Sean Grady was another top runner on the men’s side, with a third place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:15; 91. Sophomore Nazim Roberts-Smith placed second in the 400-meter dash, finishing with a time of 52.28 seconds. Senior Arnold Lane place fourth overall in the one mile run with a time of 4:44.27.
On the women’s side sophomore Briana Conyers won the long jump with a distance of 5.39 meters, along the first place finish in the triple jump with 11.72 meters, which is a NCAA provisional mark. Freshman Victoria Rozumek also had a win for the Chargers in the high jump with a height of 1.51 meters.
Sophomore Ivy Watts was a top finisher on the track with a win in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.72. Junior Ada Udaya finished first in the 55-meter dash with a NCAA provisional time of 7.25 seconds.
Freshman Olivia Tangney placed second in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:46.24, sophomore Danielle Sorrentino placed fourth in the one mile run with a time of 5:48.69, and senior Meredith O’Connor placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.20.
The Chargers competed again Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Yale Season Opener at Coxe Cage in New Haven.
For the men’s field events, Thomas returned strong with another NCAA provisional mark 7.38 meters in the long jump, freshman Ato Pinkrah won the triple jump with a distance of 13.00 meters and Rakesh Dataram won the high jump clearing 1.85 meters.
On the track, Thomas won the 200-meter dash with a time 22.00 seconds and placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.87 seconds, both NCAA provisional times.
The 4×800 relay team of Lane, Grady, senior Marvin Azor and sophomore Ryan Parris placed first with a time of 9:26.85.
On the women’s side, Conyers won the long jump and the triple jump with a distance of 5.36 meters and 11.86 meters, respectively.
Udaya won the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 7.71 seconds and 24.84, respectively. Watts placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.45 seconds.
The Chargers will return to action Jan. 12, 2013 at Yale’s Lidlifter Invitational.
