Here is some advice from Director of Facilities Operations, Richard Rutherford, and UNH sophomore and EPA Fellow Jessica Zielinski, regarding sustainability on our campus:
-The University of New Haven has the issue of people putting trash in campus dumpsters that are meant for recycling. Recycling dumpsters have a sign signifying they are for recycling, although they do look similar to trash dumpsters. People need to look for the signs on the dumpster so they use the correct one!
-Recycling on campus is single stream!
-UNH gets fined if there are items in the recycling bins that can’t be recycled.
-Some recycling bins on campus aren’t marked well enough; Green Team member, Jessica Zielinski, is working with the art department to draw up a template and paint them white.
-UNH also gets fined if recyclable materials are put in the bins in plastic bags! They must be separate pieces in the bins because the recycling all gets mechanically sorted after it leaves campus.
-Recycling is being pushed for Forest and Regency; however, since the school doesn’t own those properties, a compromise with the owner has to be made.
-We need a solution to the amount of recycling that gets thrown in classroom trashcans. Contact UNH Facilities with any suggestions!
-The new building being constructed by Kayo will have a roof to accommodate solar panels.
-Motion sensors for lights in the Beckerman Rec Center, library and Charger Gymnasium will be implemented in the near future.
-UNH is creating webpages devoted to campus recycling and waste programs. Check them out in the future!
-UNH Facilities appreciates feedback to help improve the program. If you have comments, questions, complaints or suggestions, please call Facilities at (203) 932-7087 or email [email protected].
