Registering for classes at the University of New Haven (UNH) is an essential step for students completing their degree requirements. The registration process ensures that students efficiently select courses that align with degree requirements, personal interests and (hopefully) sleep schedules. If you’re new to the process (or need reminding):
1. Understanding Registration Periods
Before diving into the registration process, it’s crucial to be aware of the academic calendar. UNH has a set registration period each semester, which are announced well in advance. This fall registration period typically takes place during the month of November. Students can find this information on the university’s website or through the Registrar’s Office. Mark these dates on your calendar to make sure you don’t miss your opportunity to register. Registration gives upperclassmen top priority for enrolling in classes first, going down the line of classes until freshmen can enroll.
2. Preparing for Registration
Preparation is key. Here are some general steps to follow so you aren’t going into registration blind:
First, every student should review their degree requirements: each degree program has specific requirements, and unless you want to approach your senior year with too few credits to graduate, every now and then have a look to make sure you are on the right track. Access your academic catalog online to familiarize yourself with core courses, electives and prerequisites.
Second, meet with an academic advisor, especially if you have no clue how to register. Scheduling a meeting with your academic advisor is a crucial step, especially as a freshman and in some departments, it’s required in order to get your all-important PIN used on registration day. Advisors can help you understand degree requirements, suggest courses and provide guidance based on your academic and career goals.
It’s always best to pre-plan what you would like in a perfect world for your schedule to be. Once you understand your requirements, draft your dream schedule. Consider the days and times that work best for you, as well as any other commitments outside of said classes, such as extracurriculars, working or perhaps your bed in the mornings. Now that you’ve planned and plotted the best schedule any Charger has ever seen, you will need to actually access the Registration System. UNH uses an online registration system, which can be accessed through the university’s portal. Go to your MyCharger page (you can type it into any browser and it will usually pop up).
Once you’ve logged into the MyCharger portal, head to the Self Service Banner icon (shaped like a person). You will then see two buttons to press, “Personal Information” and “Student.” Click the second, and then click “Registration.” Your advisor will give you your registration pin so you can put in the courses’ CRNs.
Keep in mind you will have to wake up early for registration, since the links go live at 7 a.m., which means all students will be competing for the best classes (the ones where you don’t have to wake up at 7 a.m. or stay in class until 9-10 p.m.).
At this point, congratulations! You’ve registered for your courses and are now on your way to success, here are a few additional steps to consider after you finish registering.
Check your student account: make sure your tuition and fees are in order. Any outstanding balances could affect your ability to register for future classes. Make sure you have no holds, as those will prevent you from getting the good spots.
Once you know your schedule, look into purchasing textbooks and other required materials, which will usually be listed in the description or will be posted closer to the start of the next semester. Or, if you are lacking in the money department for textbooks, be sure to research online or look around for the student community (the students tend to give away textbooks or sell them for cheap).
Keep an eye on any emails from the Registrar’s Office regarding schedule changes or important deadlines. Seniors will register for their Spring 2025 classes on Nov. 4 and special population students will register Nov. 5. Juniors will register Nov. 7, sophomores register Nov. 12 and first year students register Nov. 14.
Registering for classes at the University of New Haven is a straightforward process when you are well-prepared. By understanding the registration timeline, consulting with advisors and using the online system effectively, you can create a successful start to your semester.
