With the lousy months for new movie releases out of the way, it’s time for the cinema to start getting better again. So here are five movies I’m very excited for that are coming out this year.
1.The Place Beyond the Pines (March 20): Starring Ryan gosling and Bradley Cooper, director Derek Cianfrance’s (Blue Valentine) newest film looks to be exploring the relationships of fathers and sons, and what it means to be a father figure. Gosling plays a carnival bike performer who uses his skills to rob banks and get away so as to support his family. The trailer is literally heartbreaking in itself, and I’m so excited for this modern drama.
2. Pacific Rim (July 12): From director Guillermo del Torro, Pacific Rim looks like everything Michael Bay’s Transformers trilogy should have been: giant monsters kicking the crap out of things. With a great cast including Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman, the movie is about giant monsters attacking Earth. To counter their attack, humans use giant, human-controlled robots to fight the monsters. It doesn’t look like it’s trying to be any more than it should: giant monsters fighting giant robots.
3. Star Trek Into Darkness (May 17): The long-awaited sequel to J.J. Abrams’ massive success to 2009’s Star Trek looks just as promising, with the trailers revealing everything that made the original great: the great cast, some gorgeous CGI, and a great blend of action and humor. And with Benedict Cumberbatch signed on as the villain, it’s going to hopefully be one heck of a ride.
4. Iron Man 3(May 3): Though Iron Man 2 was met with tepid reception, Iron Man 3 looks to be everything we’ve come to love about the role that Robert Downey Jr. so perfectly embodies. Throw in Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin, Iron Man’s ultimate villain, and we’ve got what looks like another great Marvel movie
5. The Great Gatsby (May 10): As a fan of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic about the façade of the American Dream, Baz Lurhmann’s adaptation looks to be an exciting and memorable take. Loaded with great actors (including Leonardo DiCaprio as the title character), this movie has me the most excited this year.
