The Chargers lacrosse team traveled across town last week to defeat the Southern Connecticut State Owls (SCSU), 12-5. New Haven’s 12 goals were tallied up by five different players, while SCSU trailed behind with only four players able to make it past the Chargers’ stout defense.
The Chargers started strong and scored five goals by the end of the first quarter courtesy of attacker Cameryn Antler and midfielder Katie Schenk.
Schenk led the team with five goals, three of them by the end of the first quarter within a span of 27 seconds of play. Schenk scored her fourth goal late in the second quarter and her final goal in the fourth.
“This being my first year here, I still understood the impact of the rival game,” said Schenk. “I wanted to go in there and not give them a chance to get ahead of us.”
Following behind Schenk was Antler, who scored three unassisted goals for New Haven. Antler scored the first goal of the game and added another with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter. Her final goal was scored at the end of the second.
Midfielder Ivanna Hernandez was amongst the trio scoring multiple goals. Hernandez scored both goals in the second quarter within 47 seconds and added an assist.
Attacker Caitlyn Seleny and midfielder Summer Castiglione each scored a goal for New Haven. The Chargers tallied five assists, two of which coming from Hernandez and the remainder by Castiglione and Antler.
The Owls had three assists during the game. Goalkeeper Gabby Buscemi held a strong defense with seven saves and kept the Owls from scoring.
New Haven had five penalties while SCSU tallied up seven between the second and third quarter.
The Chargers were coming off a tough loss to Pace University the week before.
“Being able to recover and refocus on our next competition was important,” said Schenk. “Learning from that experience and getting better from it helped our team get the win on Wednesday night.”
With the win against SCSU, the Chargers record stood at 5-3 and 3-1 in Northeast-10 (NE-10) play. After a 13-11 loss to Saint Anselm on Saturday that pushed them to 5-4 (3-2 NE-10), New Haven will stay at home for their next matchup against Assumption University on Wednesday. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. as the team enters a crucial stretch of games against NE-10 opponents. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
