The University of New Haven’s student-run record label, Rein Records, released information that their next signing will be with up-and-coming, Massachusetts-based artist Brian Costa, who goes by B.Co in the business.
His newest single, “Nike” will be released across platforms such as Spotify, Soundcloud and YouTube Music on Thursday.
“This song brings and weaves authenticity and high energy into his music and wordplay,” said Alexander Martin, member of Rein Records.
Costa’s motivation to become an artist began in high school, he said, where he began to record songs that stayed unreleased and eventually became an obsession.
“I was making music, making songs, and it kind of got to the point where that was all I could do,” he said. “I realized that there was nothing else I could do for the rest of my life and I would fully enjoy it.”
Costa is a student at BlackBird Academy, an audio-engineering school in Nashville, Tenn., known for its sound engineering programs.
“Towards the end of high school, in senior year where everyone is picking their career paths, I saw no reason to go to college,” said Costa. “So I thought of a place where I could take this music thing seriously.”
Costa said he sees his single as a mark of triumph.
“It doesn’t have a direct theme, but it sounds to me like an anthem of victory,” he said. “It feels like things are going good, like I’m making the right moves right now.”
“Rein Records has helped me out a lot with this song,” Costa said. “I am not organized, that’s my biggest struggle. I’ll just kind of write stuff and drop it on a whim, or basically just whenever I feel like it. These guys have helped me stay organized, and they are all pretty cool, and have great music taste.”
Costa also said this would not be the last that Rein Records and the university have heard of him.
“We will see how this goes and just keep the ball rolling from there,” he said. “In the meantime, I’ve got another single that is ready to be dropped. I’m also working on a bunch of old music, things I never got around to finishing, including things like a love song, a mixtape. [There are] some big projects planned. I am not making money from this right now, what I’m doing is straight passion. I’d rather be doing this than anything else, even if it is hard.”
Costa said he takes inspiration and guidance from popular rapper and artist Tyler, the Creator.
“He’s done exactly what he wanted to do throughout his entire career,” he said, “He has never tried to appeal to anyone else, so if I could somehow replicate that, it would be great.”
You can find Costa’s music on all platforms and on his Instagram page.
