Women’s Soccer Falls 1-0 to Assumption in First Loss of the Season

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s soccer team suffered their first defeat of the season to the Assumption College Greyhounds Tuesday afternoon 1-0 at Kayo Field. The Chargers fall to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in Northeast 10, while the Greyhounds improve 1-2 on the season and 1-2 in Northeast 10 play.

The Chargers and Greyhounds battled hard for the first 35 minutes of the game before Kelley DeWalt scored in the 38th minute to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead. She scored on a shot from 30 yards out, breaking the Charger’s four-game shutout streak. The Chargers fought hard for the rest of half generating many chances, but they could not capitalize. The Greyhounds goalie, Lauren Keating stopped six shots to keep the Chargers off the board in the first half.

The second half started the same as the first, with a back-and-forth battle between the two sides. Neither team mounted the same number of chances as in the first half and the Greyhounds’ defense tightened up and limited the Chargers to just three shots in the half. The Chargers defense did the same to the Greyhounds attack, holding them to only one shot in the final 45 minutes.

Leading the way for the Chargers, Holly Dawson and Emily Buckley-Matura each had three shots, while freshman Shannon Morales added two. The Chargers held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks and a 13-6 edge in shots.

The Chargers return to action Thursday, September 10 against Georgian Court University at Kayo Field at 4 p.m. The Chargers return to conference play against UMass Lowell Saturday, September 12 at 1 p.m.
