Police officers and FBI agents are searching for evidence that will connect the California couple charged with the kidnapping and raping of Jaycee Lee Dugard to other unsolved crimes in the area.
Phillip Garrido and his wife were arrested on Aug. 26, 18 years after Dugard was abducted from her home in Lake Tahoe. Garrido, who is a registered sex offender, is suspected of having two children (both girls, ages 11 and 15) with Dugard (now 29). Authorities believe that Garrido and his wife hid Dugard and her children in a compound made of tents and sheds in their backyard.
On Aug. 30, just a few days after the couple was brought into custody, police uncovered a bone fragment in the yard adjacent to Garrido’s property. It is unsure at this time whether the bone belonged to a human or animal. However, it has been proven that Garrido had access to this land when the house on it was vacant three years ago.
Although Garrido wore a tracking device and regularly met with his parole officer, authorities were unaware of his secret compound for 18 years. In fact, Dugard and her daughters helped Garrido with his business card company. It was only after Garrido showed up to his parole meeting with his wife, Dugard, and the two girls that his secrets began to leak out.
Garrido and his wife have pled not guilty for the 29 counts connecting them to the kidnapping, rape, and captivity of Dugard. However, Garrido has admitted to abducting Dugard in 1991.
