Pick-Me-Up Playlist

Mid-semester blues can really take a toll on us during the school year. Handling midterms, catching up on assignments while also worrying about finals may not only drain our mental capacity but burden us with a lack of motivation to continue with our studies. In trying times such as these, I’ve compiled a collection of songs from my own playlist that serve me as pick-me-ups and I hope they do the same for you.

Keep Your Head Up by Andy Grammer
This feel-good tune automatically makes me release serotonin. Its acoustic nature and soulful deliverance of uplifting lyrics from Grammer give me the reassurance that everything will work out in the end and to not dwell on a current situation.

Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen
Who doesn’t know this classic? “Don’t Stop Me Now” is an upbeat, lightening-rhythmic power ballad about having a great time and not acknowledging any adversities that may come your way. Also, according to cognitive neuroscientist Dr. Jacob Jolij it’s known to be the most uplifting song of all time.

Every Little Step by Bobby Brown
This funky R&B throwback gives me all the feels on a Sunday morning when I’m looking at a full day of doing homework in my dorm. This track almost makes me feel like the harder I work is a little step (see what I did there?) closer towards getting my degree.

I’m Still Standing (Taron Egerton Version) originally by Elton John
“I’m Still Standing” reminds me that I’m more than capable of handling what gets thrown at me during a school year. It’s really easy to get discouraged, but this infectious tune of resilience is just the dose of motivation I need to carry on with the remainder of a semester.

Stronger by Kanye West
Had to switch up the vibe, of course, but It doesn’t mean this Hip-Hop classic is any less impelling. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, as West says. The impactful lyrical content and Hip-Hop electronica production of “Stronger” reminds us we are all instilled with strength and to continue through whatever we may be dealing with, against all odds.

Push It To The Limit by Corbin Bleu
If you’ve ever watched “Jump In” on Disney Channel, then you’re surely familiar with this anthem. Although this is a Disney tune, I’m incredibly guilty of playing this at the gym. Gotta push yourself to your limits to see results! In school and in all areas of life.

Try Again by Aaliyah
The next one on my list is by one of my favorite artists of all time. “Try Again” is from Aaliyah’s album “I Care 4 U.” The track is vampy, sensual and influenced by Hip-Hop elements that deliver a positive message: if you make mistakes, shake it off and try again, which, I personally try to abide by in my own personal life.

Just Fine by Mary J. Blige
Last but not least, my final tune is by R&B veteran Mary J. Blige. Don’t ask me what power this song holds over my life because I can’t even tell you. As soon as I hear it I feel as though I’m going to get it together. Whether it be getting my homework in on time, going to the gym or waking up early for class…okay maybe not the last one. Nonetheless, it’s one of my favorite feel-good tracks.

Having continuous momentum for school can be a hassle. But for me, it’s the little things that matter and help me manage through all the chaos I have in my day-to-day life. Hopefully, my few song suggestions might contain that little dose of serotonin you may need to build up your motivation again. I’m rooting for you! Have a great rest of the semester.
