Here are the 2021 Film Independent Spirit Award nominees

In January 2021, nominations for the Film Independent Spirit Awards were released. With the award show being right around the corner on April 22, let’s reflect on some of the nominees.

In addition to the film nominees, this year is the first time the Spirit Awards has included nominations for television, as well. This is great news for the new TV series “May I Destroy You,” which was nominated in two categories: “Best New Scripted Series” and “Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series.” “May I Destroy You” was the center of controversy when it did not receive any Golden Globe nominations earlier this year, despite it having a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and portraying what people experience after being sexually assaulted.

Some movies have brought in multiple nominations, such as “Promising Young Woman” with three nominations, “Nomadland” with five and “Minari” earning six. The film “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” had seven nominations, the most for this year. With its release being less than one year ago, it has already won multiple awards for Best Original Screenplay and the leading actress Sidney Flanigan has won awards for Best Actress. The director of Nomadland, Chloė Zhao, has already broken the record for most awarded filmmaker in a single season, racking up 54 awards. Here, she has been nominated for Best Feature, Best Director and Best Editing.

The 2020 film “Miss Juneteenth,” which follows a single mother who has to prepare her rebellious daughter for a beauty pageant, has four nominations including Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay, Best Female Lead and Best Supporting Female.

The late Chadwick Boseman has also received a nomination for Best Male Lead for his performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” his last acting performance before his unexpected passing in August 2020.

Here is the full list of nominees. Tune in to watch the Film Independent Spirit Awards on April 22 at 10 pm EST on IFC.
