The lady Charger’s faced the Queen’s College Knights on Friday evening (September 9) in the Charger Gymnasium and were cheered on by many of their fellow classmates as well as athletes from other U.N.H. athletic teams. The Charger Gymnasium was undoubtedly hot on Friday, but the heat did not seem to phase the athletes who managed to defeat Queens College in just three sets.

The team started off strong in the first set with impressive digs and back row hits from sophomore libero, Brianna Mirmina. Mirmina’s accurate passes gave the team a good opportunity to set up hits and kills throughout not only the first set, but the entire game. One of the teams setter’s, Kristine Rios also had a promising first set, serving three aces and having two kills,  one of which ended the first set with the Charger’s up at 25-19.

The Charger’s came back into the second set with no hesitations and started the set off with a kill from outside hitter, Meghan Kennelly. Kennelly had many powerful hits in the second set as well as in the entire game. The team showed a high level of skill when outside hitter Nicole Morales and middle hitter Alex Bussey put up a huge double block against Queens. Energy in the gymnasium was high when the entire facility erupted in cheers after the impressive double block shut down the Knights. With an even bigger lead than the first set, the Charger’s proceeded to close the second set at 25-14.

The Knights were up in beginning of the third and final set, but not for long before the Charger’s took the lead and continued their winning streak. Alex Bussey had a huge kill from the middle position which was followed by the longest rally of the game, which was won by the University of New Haven. The Knights called two time outs in this set in hopes of turning the game around in their favor. The Charger’s denied them the opportunity as they clinched victory with a finishing score of  25-18 and a kill from middle hitter Fernanda de Silva to end the game.
