The Chargers men’s basketball team was back in action at Stan Spirou Field House on Tuesday, as they traveled to Manchester, NH to take on the Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) Penmen. The game was a tight battle between both teams, ending in a Charger loss, 74-67.
Coming off a loss on Saturday versus Franklin Pierce, the Chargers looked to right the ship and get back into the win column.
The Chargers faced the Penmen back in early December, but took a tough loss to the conference foe.
Sophomore guard Jah’Likai King had the hot hand, with 27 points in 35 minutes of play. King shot 8-for-14 from the field, while also burying five three-pointers and going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. His night was capped off with four rebounds and four assists to go along with his stellar shooting. King’s performance has become a habit for him, as his 27 points tied his personal season high. Junior forward Ugo Nwachukwu was the second leading scorer of the night with 10 points, but it was his work on the glass with a team leading eight rebounds that kept the Chargers in the game. Senior guard Seth Sharif-Brown and junior forward Ethan Simmon also contributed on the score sheet with Sharif-Brown scoring nine points and Simmon dropping eight points.
The Chargers shot 40.7% from the field compared to the Penmen’s 43.3%. New Haven also shot an even 30% from three-point land, whereas SNHU shot 37.9% from behind the arc. The Chargers went 14-for-17 from the free-throw line versus SNHU’s 11-for-15 from the foul line. The Chargers finished the game with 35 rebounds and 12 assists.The Chargers tallied 14 turnovers during the game and allowed the Penmen to score 14 points off of those mishaps. The Penmen gave the ball up eight times, which gave the Chargers nine points from those turnovers.
After another loss, the Chargers fell to an overall record of 9-11 and 5-8 in conference play. The Chargers will take the road again on Tuesday to face the Saint Anselm University Hawks. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Stoutenburgh Gym. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com
